Hang Ten Tuesday with Preiss Paper & Printing

I'm so glad you've joined me today for the first Hang Ten Tuesday of 2011. To celebrate, I'm giving away some great stuff. If you like free stuff...keep reading!

This week's Hang Ten focuses on Preiss Paper & Printing, a locally owned business. I could go on and on about all the fabulous possibilities, but I thought it might be better to interview the owner, Emily Nelson, and let you know a little more through her eyes.

Tell us about yourself...your life, your family, etc.
I grew up moving all over the East Coast and always consider Atlanta, GA, my childhood home. My family still resides in Georgia. My older sister is in the Atlanta area with her husband and my two precious nieces. My parents live outside of the city on Lake Oconee. After High School I attended Elon College here in North Carolina. During the summer between my junior and senior year I met my husband Walt while doing an internship at a CBS affiliate in Greensboro. We became best friends and later that fall fell in love. Our courtship was quick with an engagement during spring semester of my senior year and a wedding one year later in June of 1999.

We moved to Atlanta and I began working in Advertising. I was a Senior Executive and loved my work on both print and media campaigns. After September 11th the company I worked for downsized, resulting in a layoff. Changing careers completely, I went to work as an Event Planner for In Touch Ministries, coordinating the speaking engagements for Dr. Charles Stanley. I became pregnant with my first son, Luke, and after his birth new that I would not be able to continue this position due to the travel. While I was still pregnant I interviewed with Swoozie's and went to work for them at their corporate office. This is where I discovered my passion for paper. After a year I began training as a wedding and paper expert. I was fortunate to be sent to Crane & Co. in Massachusetts, tour their press and museum. I am an etiquette junkie and love the creative side that comes along with designing custom invitations. When Swoozie's decided to open their first out of state store in Raleigh, Walt and I jumped at the chance to move. Walt was born and raised in Raleigh and being closer to his mother was important to the both of us after his father's passing.

Once I arrived at the Raleigh store I began handling all the printing, custom design work and wedding consultations for the store. In 2003, while pregnant with my second son Grady, Swoozie's opened another location at Cameron Village and I was promoted to oversee the printing aspect of both stores commuting and working at both locations. When Swoozie's announced they were closing their doors this past spring I was deeply sad. I had been with them for seven years, loved my work and loved the company. They were my family and treated me as such.

What prompted you to launch Preiss Paper & Printing?

After learning of Swoozie's closing, many customers approached me and asked where they would go now for all their printing needs. I did not want there to be a void in the area. These customers deserved to still have a place where they could go for quality service and exceptional design and invitations. It was the perfect opportunity to start my own company and be able to work from home, so I talked to Walt about the idea, prayed about it and then...... Preiss Paper & Printing was born.

What is your favorite part about owning your own business?

The best part of owning my own business is working out of the house and the flexibility it gives me. This time I have with my children, as they quickly grow, is precious and I do not want to take it for granted.

Share with us your favorite memory as a parent.

This is a hard one because there are soooooo many! I am truly blessed with two funny, sweet and healthy boys. They constantly make Walt and I laugh, but I would have to say the most recent was Christmas morning. When Luke saw his Hot Wheels Criss Cross Crash present from Santa all set up waiting for him he was thrilled. When he turned it on and began to play he announced...."Look, Santa even provided the batteries! He thinks of everything!"

A special thank you to Emily for taking time to share with us about herself, her family and her business. Now, let's show Preiss Paper & Printing a little love...
